Mission Statement

"The purposes of this organization are exclusively educational and shall be to preserve, advance, and disseminate knowledge of the history of Portage County, Wisconsin."

With the above mission in mind, the Society currently operates four museums; maintains a large archives housed at the University of Wisconsin -- Stevens Point's Archive Center; is developing its own research center and maintains the Malcolm Rosholt Online Archives on this website to "disseminate knowledge of the history of Portage County, Wisconsin".

The Society holds monthly meetings beginning at 6:30 P.M. on the second Wednesday of each month at the Synagogue Museum basement. (The December meeting is usually not held due to holiday conflicts.) Its Annual Meeting is held in mid-October which consists of an annual report, election of board members and a presentation or tour. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings.

The Society has two awards. The Pine and Iron Award is for people who have done something of note to preserve history. The Winn Rothman History Award is for literary works regarding history. The awards are considered annually and awarded when deserving.
