Frank & I did this act for 10 years. It was called, ’The Brigadier, Last of the Great Welsh Cannonballs’. We had much fun doing this act in Circus, on Fairs, several Theaters, even a special performance in the center of Mall of America in Minneapolis! One year, in the Circus Competitions held here in Sarasota, Florida, where performers from all parts of the world came to compete in various categories, we won the BRONZE Medal in Comedy!
The Cannon is mounted on a Ford Pinto, 1929 Replica ’Shay’. Ford produced this car to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1929 Model Ford. It was the perfect vehicle for this act. The actual barrel we had made in Billings, Montana at a special place that made aluminum tank cars for semi-trailers. Everything else, Frank did. He created the hydraulic mechanism to raise and lower the barrel. He created the ’innards’ to ’shoot’ the helmet out. Organized the control for the ’Bang’ synchronized with the smoke, etc. It was quite a project, but also, quite unique!
Me, well I designed and made the costumes, of course! (And Beulah.)
