University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point

Officially known as Stevens Point Normal its first class of 201 students began on September 17, 1894.
1894 - 1926 State Normal School
1926 - 1951 State Teachers College
1951 - 1964 State College
1964 - 1974 State University
1974 - present University of Wisconsin

This section of our Online Archives will present a short history of the founding of Stevens Point Normal and its first nine Chancellors. This short history was written by Ellen L. Specht and published May 3, 1969 for the 75th Anniversary Year.

The definitive history of this institution, "The World is Ours", was written by Justus F. Paul, Professor of History and Dean of the College of Letters and Science, for the celebration of UWSP's 100th Anniversary in 1994. This book is still available for sale. Check for availability through UWSP's Library. 

Several histories of Campus organizations will be added to this section. Also, stories of campus life and student activities will be presented here.

History of UWSP

Organizations

  • Vets 550 -- formed in 1955 by Korean War veterans. The last official meeting of this group was held in 1984. This Alumni Organization will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary at Homecoming 2005. After this re-union a more complete history will appear on this site.

Stories

  • A student in 1925 -- The following article was written by a man, now deceased, whose wife suggested that he remain anonymous.
