Civil War
Encampments

The American Civil War raged across this country from April 12, 1861 until June 23, 1865 (Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered on April 12, 1865). It has remained the largest armed conflict fought on American soil.

Many persons interested in this conflict gather around this country to reenact parts of this conflict. We are happy to host one of these historic events. While our encampment does not represent any particular event of the Civil War it does give the visitor an idea of how the Union soldiers lived and what some of their equipment looked like.

Sam Solberg, a PCHS Director and member of the King Civil War Round Table, has made arrangements to have members of the Camp 8 Sons of Veterans of the Union Civil War, McAllister's Battery encamp at Heritage Park and bring two cannons.

McAllister's Battery, also known as the 1st Illinois Light Artillery,  earned its place in history on the first day of the battle of Shiloh in Tennessee on April 6, 1862.

In 2007 the Confederate Army joined us. Jeb Stuart's 1st Virginia, Company "C" Light Horse Artillery brought their two reproduction mountain howitzers.

Cannon on right is a pack howitzer designed to be carried by one horse. Cannon on left is a prairie trail howitzer. (Notice the wider spread of the wheels.) This was designed to be pulled by one horse.

In 2007 we were able to add a night fire.
