FORWARD

The small towns, villages and surrounding rural areas are the backbone of the nation. History and the biographies of great men and women show that the small towns produce statesmen, scientists, journalists, educators, factory workers, athletes, musicians and military men who fight in the Wars of our Country.

As time passes the deeds and names of the pioneer settlers in Northern Wisconsin are forgotten. Any school boy can name the first president of the United States, but none know the name of the first president of his hometown.

Two generations have passed since the forests were cleared and the railroads laid. The third generation is now growing up in time of scientific inventions and modem day living. They have had no experiences before that.

Each village has its own individuality and is like no other, but all have the same background of pioneer life. This book was written to preserve the histories of a few that border on the Shawano and Marathon County line. They are typical of all small Wisconsin communities.

The small town is a preliminary training ground for those who leave for larger places and greater opportunities and a permanent base for those who remain.
