The Portage County Historical Society obtains many manuscripts, some do not pertain to Portage County history. We do not refuse these articles or artifacts. In this section some of the articles not about local history will be presented.

George Mattoon
George Mattoon founded the town of Mattoon Wisconsin and built a short railroad to connect it to the C&NW mainline running north out of Eland Wisconsin. Here is a brief history of his railroad and town. George was also a Civil War veteran of some renown. Unfortunately we do not have his war records.
Tigerton Historical Society
The Tigerton Historical Society is located in Tigerton, Marathon County, Wisconsin with a population of approximately 600 has a small park with historic buildings.
