Help Us Tell the 75 Stories of Portage County

In 2027, the Portage County Historical Society will celebrate its 75th anniversary. To mark this milestone, we're embarking on our most ambitious public history project yet: 75 Stories of Portage County.

Throughout 2027, we'll unveil a new collection of stories every month, ultimately sharing 75 stories that help define who we are as a community. These stories will become part of a traveling exhibit that will move throughout Portage County, with each installment paired with special programs, events, and community conversations.

But before we can tell these stories, we need your help.

What stories best represent Portage County? They might be well-known events that shaped our history, remarkable individuals who made a difference, beloved local traditions, important businesses or institutions, hidden stories that deserve greater recognition, or personal memories that capture the spirit of our community.

We're seeking stories from every corner of Portage County and from every era of our history. Whether your suggestion is famous or forgotten, large or small, we want to hear it.

Examples might include:

  • Historic events and turning points

  • Influential people and families

  • Businesses, industries, and agriculture

  • Sports, music, arts, and culture

  • Neighborhoods and communities

  • Education and innovation

  • Traditions and celebrations

  • Everyday stories that reflect life in Portage County

Not every submitted story will ultimately be included in the exhibit, but every submission will help us better understand what matters most to our community.
