Historical Society Events
The society hosts several annual events. The Plover Portage Rendezvous/Thread of History held the third weekend in July, an annual Civil War Encampment, and the Fire Station #2 has begun an annual Arts Show. In addition the Rising Star Mill has its own events schedule.
The Society also holds an Annual Meeting open to the public and participates in several local events: Cultural Fest and is a co-sponsor of the annual Arctic Run Model Railroad Show held at the Stevens Point Ramada the 3rd weekend of January.
Plover Portage Rendezvous Threads of History
The Plover Portage Rendezvous/Threads of History will be held July 18-19, 2009 at Heritage Park. The Rendezvous recreates the life of typical fur trappers and traders during the Fur Trade Era, 1815-1830. The Threads of History lets people see the crafts of that era; candle making, tatting, spinning, wool dying, weaving and many others.
Civil War Encampment
The Encampment has been moved to Pfiffner Pioneer Park along the Wisconsin River just west of downtown Stevens Point. In 2009 the Civil War Encampment will be held August 29-30.
Rising Star Mill
The Rising Star Mill located in Nelsonville will again held a variety of art and entertainment events.

| Saturday, July 11, 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM Sunday, July 12, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM THE BIZZARE BAZAAR Explore this year’s version of the annual art show, offering interesting and unique shopping indoors and outdoors! You’ll find a wide variety of artisans exhibiting artwork, photography, woodworking, pottery, fabric art, yard art... and much, much more! There will be an “Intuitional Channeler” for your enjoyment, as well as face painting and poetry walks for the children. The Mill’s “Feed Sack” will be open for refreshments. Come and join the fun! |
| Saturday, July 18, 7:30 PM L.J. BOOTH This gifted singer-songwriter makes a much-requested return to the Rising Star Mill. Along with his acoustic guitar, he has played folk clubs and festivals all across the country, leaving audiences on their feet with standing ovations. His powerful lyrics reveal his keen fascination with life’s journey, and draws listeners close to the memories and revelations that make the journey worth traveling. This is a CD release concert in which L.J. is joined by other musicians. Tickets are $10.00. |
| Friday, August 14, 7:30 PM FREE MILL MOVIE NIGHT - “THE GREAT OUTDOORS” Starring John Candy, Dan Ackroyd and Annette Bening Come and delight in this wonderful comedy about Chet, a big-hearted family man, who ventures to one of Wisconsin’s big woods on a lake for a relaxing family vacation. He is unexpectedly joined by his wheeler-dealer snake of a brother-in-law, his icy sister-in-law, and their creepy twin daughters. | Saturday, August 22 - 7:30 PM JEFF POCKAT On August 22, the Rising Star Mill will be echoing with the beautiful sounds of Jeff Pockat, a self-taught Gaelic harp musician and composer. His music, performed on the Ancient Wire Strung Celtic Harp, includes traditional and original pieces that soothe the mind, body and soul. Come and get into the spirit! |
| Saturday, September 12, 7:30 PM THE TOM McCOMB QUARTET Jenny and Tom McComb, along with Dave Story and Kevin Knopp, comprise the exciting Tom McComb Quartet. | October 29, 30 and 31, 6:30 - 9:00 PM THE RISING STAR MILL’S HAUNTED HOUSE The Stevens Point Area YMCA Boys & Girls Clubs are teaming up once again to provide a fun and eerie experience during their fifth annual haunting of The Rising Star Mill. A special family and younger children showing will be open daily from 5:30 - 6:30 PM (the lights will be on and there will be no live creatures during this hour). Are you brave enough to enter one of the scariest haunted houses in Portage County? |
THE RISING STAR MILL is on the Tomorrow River at Cty Hwys SS & Q in downtown Nelsonville, Wisconsin. All concerts start at 7:30 PM. There are no advance sales and there is limited seating. Tickets are $8.00 (except for $10.00 for L.J. Booth) for adults and seniors, $4.00 for students over 12. Children under 12 are admitted free. Families of 4 or more are $20.00.
